The research examines the English consonants by articulatory techniques coupled with the spectrograms acoustically on Praat speech processing computer-developed software. The paper investigates spoken English of Sindhi ESL learners through an acoustic and articulatory phonetics. Therefore, the Chinese people have to be accustomed to pronounce the English phonemes that are not available in Hokkien phonemes such as /ʃ/, /θ/, /ð/, /z/, /nt/, /nd/, /mp/, /lk/, /nk/, /ŋk/, /ns/, /v/, coda /p/, coda /t/, coda /k/, coda /dʒ/, and the variations of vowels to be alert on the misinterpretation due to the mispronunciation. The interferences are due to inexistence of the phonemes in Hokkien. From this study, the writer found nine main types of phonemic interferences made by the Chinese students. In this thesis, the writer also gave the description of English and Hokkien phonemes included the classifications of phonemes in both English and Hokkien phonemes along with the examples of each phoneme into tabulated samples. The analysis of the data was made into tables of the mispronounced word by the respondents and the correct pronunciation. Next, the writer transcribed the sounds recorded into the phonetic transcriptions or phonetic symbols. The writer gave a list of basic core vocabulary by Ogden (1930) to the students, then she asked the students to pronounce each word. This analysis was done by making a kind of direct recording of the sound pronounced by the Chinese students first. In connection with it, this thesis studies the ability of Chinese students in Fakultas Sastra Universitas Methodist Indonesia Medan in pronouncing the proper English phonemes. In other words, it is true to say that before learning a language, one must know all the speech sounds the language has.
People tend to judge the language ability of someone at the first time they meet by the way one speaks. Sounds are one of the most important elements in learning a language.
